The easiest approach to design is to create an environment that enhances everyday life.  Design is more than just the details, it's the finishing touch.  Be creative, be bold and have confidence in your design style!

A Little Punch of Paisley...

I feel like this admission has been a long time coming, but here it is....I LOVE PAISLEYS!  Not sure why, but for some reason I've always had it in my head that I don't like them, which is strange considering my house is a small 'I Spy' book of this beautiful print.  It just kind of creeps up on me without me even knowing and the next thing I know, BAM!...there it is on my valance.  And on my drapes.  And on my chair. And in my artwork.  This sneaky little print keeps making its way into my home and you know what?  It makes me happy.

Paisleys have been popular in design for so long and they are the perfect way to swirl into Spring!  They are so easy to incorporate into your home and can be used in both traditional and modern settings.  Over the years, this classic motif has evolved dramatically, making a once very traditional pattern, a lot more versatile.  Everything old is new again, right?  With so many different trends, I feel like this is one design that never fades.  It just re-emerges with a new 'look', which in my opinion, makes it the perfect combination of vintage and modern.

BLACK is the new BLACK

Does black ever really go out of style??  I would argue that it doesn't!

Anyone that really knows me, knows that I LOVE black!  It's timeless, elegant, sophisticated and goes with anything.  It's like that little black dress every woman owns....now matter how long you've had it, it still does the trick.

The problem is that most people are afraid of black.  I get it though...it's dark and they are afraid it's going to close in their space.  For me, I believe the exact opposite to be true.  I think black opens up your space and makes it feel limitless!  Don't believe me?  Look at the pictures I posted...I don't think any one of them look confined.  Some look cozy, others sophisticated, and the rest are just plain old fun!  Black is the chameleon of all colors...you can make it be whatever you want with as much or as little of it as you want.

Oh, and remember my last blog where I talked about showing your ceiling a little love too?  Well, guess what I did?  I painted the ceiling in my bedroom black and let me tell you....it is to die for!  I couldn't be any happier with the results...it's as if I don't have a ceiling at all.

So, what do you say...want to surprise your senses?

Do What To My Ceiling?

Why settle for just white?

Ever think of doing something crazy and completely out of the ordinary with your ceiling??  Thanks to one of my favorite teachers in college...I ALWAYS do!  During every design project she assigned, like clockwork, she would walk around to look at the progress of our projects and say...'Did you remember your ceiling?'.  To be perfectly honest, before she came along, the ceiling was something I rarely thought about.  Nowadays, I think it's one of the most important walls in a room...it's your 5TH WALL!

For about a year now, I have been collecting old, unique picture frames from garage sales in different shapes and sizes.  Once I have enough, the plan is to strategically attach them all over my basement ceiling and then apply a fresh coat of paint over the entire ceiling to harmonize them.  The frames are going to add great texture to such an unexpected place!  I can't wait to see the finished product.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't love a crisp, white ceiling...it's just that you shouldn't miss out on an opportunity to do something truly cool and unique in an area that can sometimes be neglected.  Start with just one room, like perhaps the laundry room or your bedroom.  Experiment and have fun with it....the possibilities are endless!

Want something simple? ... Paint the ceiling the same color as the walls for a seamless look!  Thinking of something a little more daring? ... Add great pattern or texture by wallpapering the ceiling!  The ceiling contributes so greatly to the overall design and feel of a space that if you're looking to breathe new life into one of your rooms, perhaps you should start by looking up!

So, to pass along the advice of a very wise woman, I say to you...'Did you remember your ceiling?'

LIQUID WALLS...

Invigorate...Illuminate...Intensify!

Let me start out first by saying that I have always loved the look of matte walls and still do!  To me, it looks so touchable, absorbs the light beautifully and hides imperfections on not so perfect surfaces.  That being said, I'm starting to veer slightly away from my comfort zone and delve into LACQUER!  The more I see it, the more I love it...especially on walls!  'Liquid Walls' as I like to call it, add instant drama, glamour and reflection to any space!  To pull this look off, your walls must be in good condition, otherwise this finish will show every flaw.  I'm not going to lie, this look can be pretty labor intensive and difficult to achieve, but the end result is a high impact room with quite a punch!

Not feeling the lacquered walls?  Try adding just a touch of it by incorporating high sheen accessories, a single painted furniture piece or even a lacquered ceiling!  I'm currently in the process of taking an old, dull dresser from lackluster to 'lacquer' luster!  The vibrant orange I selected to go on the outside paired with a gray and white chevron pattern for the inside is going to take this furniture piece to a whole new level!

So...will you dare to lacquer?

Ooh La La . . . The Beauty of Modern Parisian Design

Think opulence, panache and the epitome of style.

Modern Parisian design is a huge inspiration for me.  To me, it's this wonderful combination of old and new that oozes elegance and sophistication.  Beautiful moldings and paneling, lavish drapes and a perfectly balanced mixture of ornate antiques and modern accents are key to this style.  That's the reason I love it so much.  You see, I am always innately attracted to modern design, although I wouldn't necessarily want to live in it.  When I come home at the end of the day, I want to be welcomed by a warm and inviting space.  Modern Parisian design gives me the best of both worlds and makes me feel like I'm walking the streets of Paris.  The luxury, romance and charm of this unique blend is what keeps this style forever timeless.

This is how I 'Candy Crush'...

Here's to all of you candy lovers out there like me!

I think we are all 'crushing' on candy a little more these days because of the ever popular delicious and addictive puzzle adventure, Candy Crush Saga.  Confession...I am
completely addicted and also completely stuck on level 65! Lol.  Anyways, I started thinking the other day how cool it would be to turn that world into a reality.  It would be like living in a real life version of the house from Hansel and Gretel and let's face it, who wouldn't think that's cool?!  Whimsical themes like this are so fun to do in laundry rooms, kid's rooms or even basements!  With the right accessories and a vivid imagination, you could turn any space into your own personal candy sanctuary.

Check out some of the 'sweet' room settings and accessories I found...

STENCIL ME THIS...

Ok, update time...

Since the last time I wrote, I have a new obsession!  STENCILS!  Now I know that might seem kind of old-fashioned, but hear me out!  They are so easy to work with and they produce great results.  My go to place for stencil designs is: www.cuttingedgestencils.com.  The patterns are fun and unique.  I am in the process of decorating my new house and I can't wait to add one of their trellis or fleur de lis stencil designs to the bead board behind my counter tops in the kitchen.  It will add a small pop of pattern that won't be too overwhelming to the space, create a layered look over the texture of the bead board, add a personalized touch and most importantly....it won't break the bank!  Getting brand new tile for a back splash can be pricey so I think this will be the perfect solution!  Plus, I really want to keep the existing bead board.  It fits in nicely with the 'USED' Chic Look I am going for.

As a side note, I also love stenciled floors!  It adds a great 'designer touch' and also helps to add life to dull wood or concrete floors.  Unfortunately for me, I don't have the right kind of flooring indoors to create this look, but I certainly do outside!  I have a walk out deck area and underneath where the patio set is, I plan on adding a painted rug.  How cool is that going to be?!?!  Lol!  I'm pretty excited about it...

Anyways, check out some of these great stencil examples!  Maybe they'll help inspire your next project!

Discover Classy Comfort...

Mesa Verde Tan - Benjamin Moore AC-33

As promised!...INTRODUCING (drum roll please)...MESA VERDE TAN!

Mesa Verde Tan has long been not only my favorite neutral color from the Benjamin Moore collection, but my favorite color period. A warm comforting hue like Mesa Verde Tan is the perfect option to keep your room both neutral and stylish.  I consider it to be the 'perfect neutral'.  It's current, soft on the eyes and easy to live with.  Decorating with neutrals can be a very chic approach to designing a room, especially when they have gray undertones and Mesa Verde Tan is no exception.  This color is anything but boring!  Besides...just saying Mesa Verde Tan makes you sound sophisticated!

My first blog…

To blog or not to blog, that is the question…

To blog it is! A couple of days ago I decided to venture into the exciting world of blogging. Needless to say, it has not been going very well. My first crack at this whole thing started with the topic, ’25 Tips to Successful Interior Design.’ Not even two sentences in, my Mom spaced off and began to snore. What can I say, she was right. It was contrived, ordinary, and BORING. So, here I am, four days later, still staring at the same screen. Although not successful at first, I must trek on. So, I say to you fellow reader, it is your lucky day! You have the distinct honor of being apart of my first blog. Topic … undecided. This may be a bit of a bumpy ride, but here we go…

I think the easiest place for me to start is from the beginning. Back to the basics if you will. What was it that first attracted me to Interior Design? The idea that one room can be transformed into so many different styles? The creative, imaginative and artistic freedom it gives? The idea that what is in my head has the possibility to be turned into reality? I guess it’s a little bit of it all. Design has such an influence on our everyday lives and in a weird way, I feel honored to be a part of that, no matter how small or large the contribution. It’s like having a super power. The ability to infuse life into a room, transform personality into space and boldly splash color where few have splashed before! (Either I am giving the field way to much credit or I have been watching a little too much of ‘The Big Bang Theory’.) Nevertheless, you get my point.

Thought bubble…Mesa Verde Tan! We’ll talk more about it in my next blog. One clue, it is not something that you get on vacation…

So please stay with me through this journey and together we will explore what it means to create, experiment, innovate…DESIGN! Until then, I wish you happy designing!
